Mainland: Avian Influenza, poultry

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Mainland confirmed a new outbreak of Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Zhongwei city of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Nigeria: Avian Influenza, poultry

In Nigeria, Avian Influenza (H5N1) was reported in a commercial farm and two backyards in Taraba state. So far, Avian Influenza has been reported in 14 out of 36 states of Nigeria and in the Ferderal Capital Territor.  No human case has been reported.

Russia: Avian influenza, poultry

In Tuva Republic of Russia, a total of 1 622 dead birds have been found since 15 June 2006.  Avian Influenza subtype H5N1 virus was detected in the blood samples of the dead birds.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Plague

As of 19 June 2006, 22 deaths have been confirmed out of 144 identified cases of pneumonic Plague in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Twelve zones in Ituri with total population of almost 100 000 were affected by the plague outbreak.

Chad: Cholera

The Chad's government confirmed an outbreak of Cholera in Massakory of Hadjer-Lamis.  The first case of Cholera was reported on 7 June 2006.  As of 15 June 2006, a total of 31 cases were registered, among them 11 have died.

India: Cholera

Five hundred and three cases of Cholera have been reported in New Delhi of India in 2006.  Thirty four cases were reported in the week up to 23 June 2006.

India: Malaria

Since January 2006, Malaria has killed 55 people and infected more than 18 000 others in India's eastern state of West Bengal. In Darjeeling, almost 2 400 people were infected, compared with just 700 in the same period of 2005.  Officials at the School of Tropical Medicine in Kolkata said that a new strain of Plasmodium falciparum was the likely cause of the infections.

Marshall Islands: Typhoid Fever

Twenty-two cases of Typhoid Fever have been confirmed in the Marshall Islands' capital of Majuro since mid-March 2006.  A sharp increase of number of cases was noted in June 2006.

Malaysia: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Since January 2006, the outbreak of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease had afflicted 10 861 children in Sarawak of Malaysia and resulted in 11 deaths.  Sibu had the highest number of sufferers, with 2 604 cases reported, followed by Miri with 2 006 cases, Kuching with 1 456 cases, Bintulu with 1 333 cases, Sarikei with 920 cases and Mukah with 770 cases.

Poland: Measles

A surge in the number of cases of Measles had been observed in Poland in 2006.  Sixty cases were reported in between January and May this year, whereas 11 and 13 cases were reported in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
