Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human (suspected) In Indonesia, 7 people from the same village in Karo district of North Sumatra have been hospitalized for suspected Avian Influenza. Preliminary tests have cleared 6 of them of suspected Avian Influenza.
(Source: ProMED-mail 2, 3 and 4 August 2006) Thailand: Avian Influenza, human (suspected) and poultry Three suspected human cases of Avian Influenza were reported in Thailand pending further confirmation. A 27-year-old man in Uthai Thani province was suspected to die of Avian Influenza infection. In Lop Buri Province, a 61-year-old woman fell ill with bird-flu-like symptoms soon after her backyard chickens all suddenly dropped dead. Another 9-year-old girl died after developing symptoms of fever, sore throat, and severe cough. Her family has kept 20 fighting cocks but none of the cock died of any unknown cause.
In addition, an outbreak of Avian Influenza was reported in a farm in Nakhon Phanom province. There were 5 500 susceptible birds with 2 241 cases and deaths resulting in the destruction of 3 259 birds.
(Source: ProMED-mail 4, 5 and 6 August 2006) Vietnam: Avian Influenza, human (suspected) and poultry A suspected human case of Avian Influenza was reported in Vietnam. A 35-year-old man from the southern province of Kien Giang had been hospitalized for high fever and respiratory failure. His lung has been severely damaged. He had eaten meat from a dead duck before onset of symptoms.
In addition, 2 wild storks in a theme park in Ho Chi Minh City were tested positive for Avian Influenza (H5). The local animal health worker have killed 53 wild storks at the park.
(Source: ProMED-mail 4 and 6 August 2006) Germany: Avian Influenza, poultry A swan found dead in Dresden zoo in eastern Germany was found to be infected with Avian Influenza (H5N1) virus.
(Source: ProMED-mail 6 August 2006) Taiwan: Dengue Fever (update) In Kaohsiung of Taiwan, 28 cases of Dengue Fever have been reported since July 2006. Among these, 25 cases are from Qienzeng district and 3 from Qianjin district.
(Source: ProMED-mail 6 August 2006) Mainland: Rabies, human Since January 2006, 16 people in JIning City in Shandong province of Mainland died of Rabies. The local authorities had ordered compulsory immunization or destruction of dogs.
[Editor's note: According to the Ministry of Health of China, 257 cases of Rabies were reported in Mainland in June 2006. In 2005, a total of 2537 cases of Rabies have been reported.]
Spain: Viral meningitis The incidence of Viral Meningitis has increased dramatically in the Madrid region of Spain in 2006. Since January it has afflicted 411 people, almost 3 times more than the total for the same period in 2005. 80 percent of the patients were under 15 years of age, and 2 have died.
[Editor note: Viral Meningitis is the infection of meninges caused by a wide variety of viruses. Symptoms of viral meningitis include fever, headache, and neck stiffness. Majority of the cases of Viral Meningitis recover with no complications.]
