Cambodia: Avian Influenza, human In Cambodia, the sixth case of human infection with the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus was confirmed. The case occurred in a 12-year-old boy from Prey Veng. He died on 4th this month.

(Source: ProMED-mail 5 April 2006) Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human The Ministry of Health in Indonesia had confirmed a human infection with the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus, but the cause was still under investigation. The case occurred in a 20-month-old girl who resided in Kapuk, West Jakarta. She developed symptoms of fever and cough on 17 March and died on 23 March.
(Source: World Health Organization 4 April 2006) Vietnam: Avian Influenza, poultry Vietnam had detected H5 Avian Influenza after 30 birds died on 3 farms in Cao Bang province. Health workers had slaughtered 157 chickens and ducks. Further tests were pending.
(Source: ProMED-mail 8 April 2006) United Kingdom: Avian Influenza, bird A dead swan found in Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom was confirmed to have H5N1 Avian Influenza virus. United Kingdom was the 14th country in the European Union to find the disease on its territory.
(Source: ProMED-mail 6 April 2006) Germany: Avian Influenza, bird The eastern German state of Saxony had confirmed for the first time the presence of H5N1 Avian Influenza virus in domestic fowl. This was the 2nd confirmed case of H5N1 in domestic fowl in the European Union after a case in France.
(Source: ProMED-mail 5 April 2006) Burkina Faso: Avian Influenza, poultry Burkina Faso reported its first outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza at the Saaba department, Kadiogo province in 1 March 2006 when 123 helmeted guineafowls were found dead.
(Source: ProMED-mail 5 April 2006) Egypt: Avian Influenza, human Health authorities in Egypt had confirmed 11 human cases of H5N1 Avian Influenza infection so far. Three of these cases were fatal. All cases occurred in children and young adults, and had a history of close contact with dead or diseased poultry.

(Source: ProMED-mail 6 April 2006) Africa: Cholera The outbreak of Cholera continued to affect Mozambique. In the northern province, Nampula, a total of 360 cases with 8 deaths had been recorded so far since the outbreak started about 3 weeks ago. Other provinces where Cholera cases had been reported this year were Sofala, Zambezia, and Manica.
In Ghana, an outbreak of Cholera had hit Komenda and its surrounding villages in the Central Region. So far, 63 cases had been reported, with one person dead.
In Zanzibar of Tanzania, Cholera had claimed another victim's life, making a total of 5 deaths so far. Zanzibar had experienced 2 severe eruptions of Cholera in 1978 and 1999, when hundreds of people died of the epidemic.
In Angola, a total of 155 people had died of Cholera among the 3693 cases reported between 13 Feb and 4 Apr 2006. Cholera cases continued to be reported in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Benguela, and Kwanza Norte.
(Source: ProMED-mail 7 April 2006) Malaysia: Chikungunya Fever In Malaysia, more than 200 people had been diagnosed to have contracted Chikungunya Fever, and 7 people had been hospitalised since the disease was first detected 2 weeks ago in the village in northern Perak state.
(Source: ProMED-mail 5 April 2006) India: Chikungunya Fever Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra of India had been severely affected by Chikungunya Fever. More than 36 000 cases have been reported in Karnataka alone.
(Source: ProMED-mail 8 April 2006) Indonesia: Dengue Fever In greater Jakarta, Indonesia, over 7 600 cases of Dengue Fever with 14 deaths had been recorded in the last three months. There were 2 470 patients in January, 2 433 in February and 2 718 in March 2006. In Bekasi, 924 cases of Dengue Fever occurred between January and March 2006. Eight people had died.

(Source: ProMED-mail 8 April 2006) Paraguay: Dengue Fever In Paraguay, nearly 500 persons had been infected with Dengue Fever virus. Many presented with haemorrhagic manifestations. The main infectious area was the neighborhood of La Encarnacion in downtown Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital.

(Source: ProMED-mail 5 April 2006) Sri Lanka: Hong Kong Traveller Contracted Dengue Fever The Department of Health confirmed an imported case of Dengue Fever, bringing to 6 cases so far this year. The 35-year-old female complained of fever, muscle pain and headache since 14 February. She had travelled to Sri Lanka prior to onset of symptoms.
