South Korea: Avian Influenza, poultry

South Korea confirmed the third outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza in North Cholla province. The third outbreak was discovered at a quail farm about 18 kilometers from the original outbreak.

Mainland: Rabies, human

According to the Mainland's Ministry of Health, there were 270 deaths caused by Rabies last month and 354 people were bitten by rabid animals.
In Beijing, all the 550 323 registered dogs have received anti-rabies inoculations. More than 118 000 people have also received anti-rabies inoculations after bitten or scratched by dogs or cats by mid-November 2006. Forty-five anti-rabies clinics have been set up to provide 24 hour medical assistance to those bitten by dogs.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Poliomyelitis

A new case of Poliomyelitis was notified in Democratic Republic of the Congo and the victim was 10 years old. It was a wild type I poliovirus and investigation result was pending to determine whether it was an imported case.

Africa: Cholera (update)

Over 92 people had died of Cholera in Uganda in last twelve months. In November, 12 deaths occurred as a total of 508 cases were recorded. In October, 13 deaths were recorded out of 408 cases. So far in December, there were at least 3 fatalities out of 142 cases. It put the national accumulative figure of cases at 4386 with Kitgum (1460 cases) and Kampala (463 cases) as the most affected districts. The number of Cholera cases in Kampala had risen to 511 as on 14 December.
At least 4 people had died of Cholera in the past day in Ganda district, southern Benguela province of Angola. The number of death rises to 7 out of 67 cases notified since 6 Dec 2006.

USA: E. coli O157:H7

An outbreak of E.Coli O157:H7 occurred in the USA in the last week of November 2006. A total of 71 cases in the 5 northeastern states (Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina) had been reported. Shredded lettuce was the "most likely" food that caused the outbreak.

Cruise ship: Norovirus infection

More than 380 passengers and crew members aboard "Freedom of the Seas" were sickened by Norovirus during a 2006 Caribbean cruise from 26 November to 3 December. The ship was held in port for intensive cleaning. The ship carried more than 3 900 passengers on its latest cruise.
Another ship, "Sun Princess," was also undergoing a thorough cleaning after docking at Port Everglades with 97 sick passengers. The ship carried about 1 950 passengers.
