Mainland: Avian Influenza, human

The Ministry of Health of the Mainland had reported the country¡¦s 18th case of human infection with the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus. The patient was an 8-year-old girl from Sichuan Province. She developed symptoms of fever and pneumonia on 16 April. She remained hospitalised. Of the 18 laboratory-confirmed cases in China, 12 had been fatal.

Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human and poultry

A 30-year-old Indonesian man died of suspected Avian Influenza on 26 April. If confirmed, he would be Indonesia's 25th death from the H5N1 virus. He had a history of contact with sick chickens near his house.
In Gianyar regency, Bali, hundreds of ducks had been culled after samples tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus. No human cases had been reported on the island. The H5N1 virus had been reported in birds in most of the country's 33 provinces.

Afghanistan: Avian Influenza, poultry

In Afghanistan, H5N1 Avian Influenza outbreak was confirmed in the Kapisa province, north east of the capital, Kabul. Other affected provinces included Jalalabad, Kabul, Laghman, Vardak, and Kunar. No human cases had been found so far.

Germany: Avian Influenza, bird

In Germany, 330 cases of Avian Influenza in wild birds had been confirmed as of 25 April. Recent cases were reported in the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria.

UK: Avian Influenza (H7N3), human

In Norfolk, UK, a poultry farm worker was suffering from conjunctivitis after contracting the H7N3 strain of Avian Influenza. The patient was infected through close contact with birds. The patient had no other symptoms and not required hospital treatment.
H7 is not easily passed from poultry to human or from human to human.

Cote d'Ivoire: Avian Influenza, poultry

Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza affecting poultry had been reported in Abidjan district (Marcory Anoumabo and Treichville communes) and in Lagunes region of Cote d'Ivoire.

Indonesia: Cholera

In Indonesia, the Cholera outbreak since 16 March in Jayawijaya regency had killed 178 people. The outbreak had spread to nearby Yahukimo regency where another 33 residents had died of the disease.

Africa: Cholera

Till the end of April, the Cholera outbreak in Angola had caused about 900 deaths and 20 000 cases in just over 2 months. The provinces reporting Cholera cases were Luanda, Bengo, Beguela, Kwanza Norte and Kwanza Su.
In Uganda, about 70 Cholera victims were discovered in Kitgum district and 64 people infected in Arua district in the latest outbreak.
A recent outbreak of Cholera near the Cameroon capital of Yaounde had killed at least 10 people and more than 50 people had contracted the disease.
In Tanzania, the number of Cholera deaths in Dar es Salaam had reached 50 since the pandemic broke out in December 2005 and at least 4 244 people had contracted the disease so far.

Africa: Meningococcal Meningitis

In Nigeria, about 40 people had been confirmed dead following an outbreak of Meningitis in Kano state. A similar outbreak killed 6 people in Kebbi state last week while 86 people had been treated in hospital in Zamfara state. An outbreak of Meningitis had killed 4 people and affected over 1 000 others in some parts of Katsina state last week.
A Meningitis epidemic in Eastern Guinea had hit at least 168 people and killed 17 since the beginning of April 2006.
An outbreak of meningitis in Niger had killed 109 people since the start of 2006 and infected 1 550 others.
In neighboring Burkina Faso, Meningitis had infected 6110 people and killed 616 of them by 18 March 2006.

Cambodia: Dengue Fever

An outbreak of Dengue Fever occurred in Kompong Chhnang province of Cambodia, about 90 km north of the capital. All 30 patients were hospitalised with no death reported.

Thailand: Dengue Fever

From January to mid-April, 4 971 people had contracted Dengue Fever with 8 reported deaths in Thailand. The current figures showed that Dengue Fever infection rates began to soar since early 2006.
