Thailand: Avian Influenza, human

The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand had confirmed a case of human infection with H5N1 Avian Influenza virus. The patient, a 17-year-old man from Thap Khlo district of Phichit province in the north had buried dead chickens on 10 July, developed symptoms 5 days later, was hospitalised on 20 July and died on 24 July. His sample was also tested positive for Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. This case coincided with a recurrence of a confirmed H5N1 outbreak in animals in the province.
This was the first human case of H5N1 infection reported from Thailand in 2006.

Thailand: Avian Influenza, poultry

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry confirmed an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza in Phichit province, Thailand. The virus was detected in a fighting cock carcass from Bang Mun Nak district.

India: Japanese Encephalitis

Health authorities in Assam State of India had issued a Japanese Encephalitis outbreak alert following the death of 20 people in the past 2 weeks. In Uttar Pradesh State, at least 4 children had tested positive for the virus.

[Editor's note: Around 1800 deaths have been recorded during the Japanese Encephalitis outbreak in India last year. Since May 2005, nearly 11 million children have been vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis in 4 northern states]

 

India: Leptospirosis

An outbreak of Leptospirosis occurred in Mumbai city, Maharashtra state, India, with the toll of fatalities rising to over 60 since the monsoons began. Over 150 people were suspected to be infected with the disease, and over 40 others were critically ill.

Uganda: Cholera

In Arua of Uganda, Cholera hit a local hospital last week, causing at least one death. Two other Cholera patients had been discharged. The Cholera inpatients came from the same family, while the deceased was their neighbour.
At least 24 cases of Cholera had been registered in Gulu district, following the disease outbreak in the district 2 weeks ago. One Cholera case was also registered in Pader district.

Belarus: Measles

Eighty-seven cases of Measles were notified in Belarus from January to June 2006. Efficient transmission had been particularly noted in Minsk city, Minsk region and Grodno region.
