Mainland: Avian Influenza, bird The health official in the Mainland reported an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza occurred on 1 March 2007 among poultry in Chengguan Village near Lhasa which resulted in the death of 680 fowl.

(Source: ProMED-mail 11 March 2007) Indonesia: Chikungunya Fever In Bekasi of Indonesia, 98 people were diagnosed with Chikungunya Fever after the flood in February. The disease was spreading rapidly and the number was expected to rise.
(Source: ProMED-mail 8 March 2007) Bulgaria: Mumps As of 2 March 2007, 500 people had fallen ill with Mumps in the town of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. The most susceptible group includes those who were born in the period 1982-1988 because they were not vaccinated. The 1st case appeared in western Bulgaria. Now there were affected people in the localities of Varna, Burgas, Sofia, and Plovdiv.
(Source: ProMED-mail 6 March 2007) Uganda: Plague In Uganda, the Ministry of Health had announced that the pneumonic Plague that hit Masindi district had been contained. In the last 2 weeks, 11 of the 19 cases had been discharged. No new cases have been reported in the same period.
(Source: ProMED-mail 9 March 2007) Africa: Cholera In Banadir of Somalia, at least 40 children with Cholera were admitted to hospital in early March. In Gedo of southern Somalia, 9 children and an old woman died from Cholera.
In Malakal of Sudan, Cholera infected 81 people and caused 11 deaths.
In Angola, 221 people, out of more than 5 000 cases, died of Cholera in Huila province since April 2006. About 610 Cholera cases, from which 10 resulted in deaths, were registered from January to 6 March 2007 in Luanda.
(Source: ProMED-mail 9 March 2007) Africa: Meningococcal Meningitis Outbreaks of Meningococcal Meningitis had been recorded in 7 other West African countries in 2007. As of 2 March 2007, the death toll in Burkina Faso rose to 324, which was by far the hardest hit country in the region, with almost 1 000 additional people infected in the last week bringing the total number of recorded cases to 3 625. Outbreaks had been recorded in 5 out of 53 health districts, with 14 other districts on alert. Elsewhere in the region the worst hit country was Cote d'Ivoire with 100 cases and 28 deaths followed by, 84 cases and 14 deaths in Niger, 73 cases and 6 deaths in Mali and 68 cases and 16 deaths in Benin. Other cases had been reported in Ghana, Togo and Guinea.
(Source: ProMED-mail 6 March 2007) Peru: Rabies In Peru, the Ministry of Health reported 527 cases of vampire bat bites between July 2006 and 15 February 2007 from Puno and Madre de Dios. More than 20 people were claimed by Rabies infection after the bite since last December.

(Source: ProMED-mail 11 March 2007) USA: Passengers of cruise ship contracted gastroenteritis More than 167 of the ship's 1 200 passengers of a cruise ship "Ryndam" and at least a dozen crew members contracted gastroenteritis. The cruise ship ended its 10-day voyage in San Diego, the USA. In summer last year, 110 passengers were sickened by Norovirus infection.
