Singapore: Dengue Fever

Health officials of Singapore said that the 430 Dengue Fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever cases in Week 27 (1 to 7 July) had reached the year's highest level. As at 14 July, the total number of Dengue Fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever cases were 4 406, which was much higher than the 1 781 cases during the same period in 2006.

Vietnam: Avian Influenza, poultry

In Vietnam, Animal Health Department reported new poultry outbreaks of H5N1 Avian Influenza in the southern province of Dong Thap and in the northern province of Dien Bien. Up till now, a total 6 provinces have been affected by the disease.

Vietnam: Streptococcus suis Infection

In Vietnam, 21 cases of Streptococcus suis infection with 2 deaths have been reported so far this year. It is a potentially fatal disease that occurs mainly among those who slaughter infected pigs or process contaminated pork.

Cambodia: Dengue Fever

The World Health Organization and health officials of Cambodia said that the Dengue Fever situation in the country was particularly severe this year. So far this year, there have been 14 986 Dengue Fever cases with 182 deaths, compared with 12 300 cases with 116 deaths in the whole of 2006.

USA: Tularemia

In USA, 13 people with symptoms of Tularemia were reported in Utah and 2 of them were confirmed to have contracted the infection. All of the people infected had camped on the west side of Utah Lake between the end of June and the first week of July this year.

India: Malaria

During the last 6 months, 2 883 Malaria cases were recorded in Goa of India, among them, 788 cases were caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly of the four Plasmodium species. During the same period last year, 1 552 Malaria with 240 cases of Plasmodium falciparum were reported. In Rajasthan, over 1 110 cases of Malaria were recorded during the first week of July, compared with 667 cases during the same week last year.

Nepal: Cholera

Health officials of Nepal reported a Cholera outbreak in Kathmandu started in mid July. A total of 223 cases have been recorded so far. Cholera could be transmitted by contaminated water. In April, 28 percent of the cityˇ¦s drinking water was unsafe to drink; by July, 72 percent was unsafe.

Egypt: Avian Influenza, human

Health official of Egypt confirmed a human case of H5N1 Avian Influenza affecting a 25-year-old woman in the Nile Delta. The patient had contact history with sick poultry at home before onset. She was the 38th cases of Avian Influenza in the country,.

Guatemala: Dengue Fever

As of mid June, there were 1 402 cases of Dengue Fever in Guatemala, showing a 20 percent increase as compared with that during the same period in 2006. Half of the 22 departments of the country are at risk of Dengue Fever outbreaks..
