Pakistan: Avian Influenza, bird

In Pakistan, the authorities had confirmed that the deadly H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza killed 24 birds at the capital Marghazar zoo from 12 to 19 February 2007.

Russia: Avian Influenza, bird

Russia had confirmed outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza in 3 farms near Moscow. In this month, bird deaths were registered at small private farms in the region of Moscow, in the neighboring Kaluga region and in the republic of Adygeya. The Moscow region outbreaks were the second instance of bird flu in Russia this year. Health officials had traced all outbreaks in the Moscow region to birds bought in the last 2 weeks at the Sadovod market, while the outbreak in Adygeya could had been caused by migrant fowl.

Afghanistan: Avian Influenza, bird

In Afghanistan, outbreaks of H5N1 Avian Influenza occurred in Nangarhar and Kunar recently, affecting 202 birds, of which 73 died. There were also confirmed cases of H5N1 Avian Influenza in birds in Afganistan in 2006, but not in humans.

Indonesia: Dengue Fever

The total number of deaths from seasonal Dengue Fever in Indonesia since January 2007 had reached 330 out of 23 000 infected people.

Paraguay: Dengue Fever

A Dengue Fever epidemic was ravaging Paraguay, where more than 10 000 people had fallen ill. At least 4 people had died from the virus.

Africa: Meningococcal Meningitis

According to the Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso and the World Health Organization, over 1 300 cases of Meningococcal Meningitis had been recorded, with 142 deaths, in these districts: Banfora, Batie, Dano, Hounde, Nanoro, Ouargaye, Sapouy, and Titao. The ministry has planned for a vaccination campaign and intensive surveillance in these areas.
Health authorities in Cote d'Ivoire had reported an outbreak of Meningococcal Meningitis in the north of the country. As of 5 Februay 2007, 36 cases, including 6 deaths, had been reported in the city of Bouake. A vaccination campaign was being prepared.
Since the first case in Arua in December 2006, at least 2 000 cases of Meningococcal Meningitis had been registered with 65 deaths in West Nile of Uganda. The disease also spread to Nebbi, Nyadri, Koboko, Moyo, Yumbe, and Adjumani districts. A mass immunization campaign was launched.

Africa: Cholera

In Ethiopia, an outbreak of suspected Cholera infected about 60 000 people with 680 people died.
In northern province of Sierra Leone, 190 cases were infected with suspected Cholera with 2 deaths.
According to figures from the United Nations Children's Fund, as of 14 February, 4 229 cases of Cholera infection and 82 deaths occurred in the Republic of Congo since the outbreak declared at the end of January. The economic centre Pointe-Noire was the most affected area, followed by Kouilou area and the capital Brazzaville.
In Zimbabwe, 3 people were claimed by Cholera infection in Epworth, an impoverished shanty town with poor water supply, south of the capital Harare.
