Indonesia: Chikungunya Fever In Indonesia, an outbreak of Chikungunya Fever affecting 26 people was reported in Kabupaten Malang, East Java.
(Source: ProMED-mail 25 November 2007) Myanmar: Avian Influenza, poultry In Myanmar, an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza which killed 2 058 birds was reported in Shan State. A total of 533 birds were culled.
(Source: World Organisation for Animal Health 23 November 2007) Thailand: Cholera In Thailand, 761 people with severe diarrhoea caused by Cholera were reported, 7 of them died. Most local people still ate half-cooked food like cockles, which was sometimes tainted with Cholera bacteria.
(Source: ProMED-mail 21 November 2007) Vietnam: Cholera In Vietnam, the total number of patients with diarrhoea has increased to 1 912, including 257 Cholera patients. Hanoi and Ha Tay are the key sites for acute diarrhoea epidemics, and account for 12 of the latest 17 Cholera patients in recent days.
(Source: ProMED-mail 21 November 2007) Brazil: Dengue Fever In Brazil, 2007 has been the year with the greatest number of Dengue Fever cases in the history of Sao Paulo. A total of 78 600 cases with 34 deaths were reported so far this year.
(Source: ProMED-mail 20 November 2007) Chile: Rabies, animal In Chile, one dog and one cat from a village in Maule region were diagnosed to have Rabies. The possible source of the infection was from bat.
(Source: World Organisation for Animal Health 21 November 2007) Dominican Republic: Leptospirosis In the Dominican Republic, an outbreak of Leptospirosis has affected 193 persons and killed at least 25 people. The outbreak, linked to flooding caused by Tropical Storm Noel in October, was initially limited to a region along the banks of the Ozama River north and east of the capital. However, cases had now been confirmed as far away as the Barahona beach resort on the southern coast.
(Source: ProMED-mail 24 November 2007) St. Lucia: Dengue Fever Since October this year, St. Lucua has been hit by a major Dengue Fever outbreak. There were a total of 13 cases reported which was only one less than that in the whole 2006. Most of the cases were recorded in the capital, Castries.
(Source: ProMED-mail 20 November 2007) Angola: Disease of unknown origin As of 19 November 2007, over 390 people were affected in an outbreak of disease of unknown origin reported in Cacuaco, Angola. Investigation revealed extremely high levels of bromide in the plasma sampled from several affected patients.
(Source: World Health Organization 21 November 2007) Democratic Republic of the Congo: Cholera Some 272 cases of Cholera, including 8 deaths, have been detected since the beginning of September in a north eastern district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outbreak has essentially been due to a lack of drinkable water, forcing residents to consume non-treated water from Lake Albert.
(Source: ProMED-mail 21 November 2007) Sudan: Rift Valley Fever (update 2) As of 21 November, 436 cases of Rift Valley Fever including 161 deaths had been reported in White Nile, Sennar, and Gazeera States of Sudan. Most of the cases were from Gazeera. Apart from this, 15 cases including 3 deaths were reported in Khartoum State, but they were most likely infected in the other affected areas.
