Bangladesh: Avian influenza, human

Bangladesh reported its 1st confirmed human case of Avian Influenza on 22 May. The case was a 16-month-old boy from the capital Dhaka. His condition is improving, but remains quarantined. He had contacted with chickens bought by his family before.

Mongolia: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

As of 22 May, there were 1 000 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Mongolia. The capital city Ulaanbaatar and 11 provinces were affected.

Central African Republic: Yellow Fever

As of 15 May 2008, the Ministry of Health of the Central African Republic has reported 2 laboratory confirmed cases of Yellow Fever from Ouham-Pende Prefecture.

Philippines: Dengue Fever

The Department of Health in the Philippines recorded nearly 10 000 Dengue Fever cases from January to April this year. This was almost 30 percent higher than the number of cases during the same period last year. The disease caused 111 deaths.

Brazil: Dengue Fever

In Brazil, a total of 155 985 Dengue Fever have been reported in Rio de Janeiro state with 110 deaths. Forty-two percent of the deaths occurred in children 0-15 years of age.
As of 16 May, the state of Ceara had 17 384 confirmed cases this year, with 9 fatal cases. More than 70 percent of the cases were in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara.
Sao Paulo recorded 1 043 confirmed and 141 suspected cases of Dengue Fever.

Laos: Dengue Fever

Laos reported 581 cases of Dengue Fever with 3 deaths. Health officials are warning the public to ensure their homes and gardens are free of stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

Vietnam: Dengue Fever

In Vietnam, more than 3000 children have Dengue Fever in Ho Chi Minh City, twice the number last year.

India: Chikungunya Fever

The estimated number of Chikungunya Fever cases in Karnataka, India, reached 4 000, among these, 2 100 cases were confirmed. The disease has already spread to Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady and Bantwal, with Sullia the worst affected.

United Kingdom: Measles

In London of United Kingdom, there were over 200 cases of Measles in the first 5 months of this year. The whole nation recorded 1 000 cases of the disease last year.

Turkey: Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever

Turkey reported a fatal case of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever. The victim was a woman who was thought to have been transmitted by a tick bite in the town of Sivas. More than 500 residents of Istanbul have flocked to hospitals for treatment in a scare.
