Mainland China: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

In the Mainland, 4 141 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease including 3 deaths were reported in Jilin province between 1 May and 23 July.

Argentina: Rabies, human

Argentina reported a fatal case of human Rabies. The victim was an 8-year-old boy living in Jujuy province. He was bitten by a dog in April. Jujuy province has had an outbreak of rabies for the past 2 years.

India: Japanese Encephalitis

In India, 324 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome with 71 deaths were reported in Basti and Gorakhpur division so far this year. Among these, 6 deaths were confirmed to be caused by Japanese Encephalitis. (Source: ProMED-mail 24 July 2008)

Russia: Anthrax, human

In Russia, an outbreak of Anthrax affecting 13 people was reported in Buryatia. Eight cases were laboratory-confirmed cases.

Russia: Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever

In Russia, 53 cases of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever have been reported in Rostov Oblast since March this year.
