Mainland: Avian Influenza, human

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) on April 28 two human cases of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Jiangxi, one in Zhejiang and one in Fujian. The two cases in Jiangxi involve an 80-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman who are receiving treatment in hospital and their respective conditions are stable and serious. The 19 close contacts of them are asymptomatic so far. The case in Zhejiang involves a 38-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is serious. The case in Fujian involves an 80-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is critical. The 33 close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far.

Mexico: Avian Influenza, poultry

Mexico reported an outbreak of H7N3 Avian Influenza in Tlaxcala and 950 birds were killed.

USA: Salmonella outbreak

In USA, a total of 73 cases of Salmonella infection were reported across 18 states. Preliminary information indicates that consumption of imported cucumbers is the likely source of infection.

Mainland: Avian Influenza, human

The Centre for Health Protection verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission on 27 April one human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Hunan and Jiangxi respectively. The case in Hunan involves a 64-year-old woman who is receiving treatment in hospital. The 41 close contacts of her are asymptomatic so far. The case in Jiangxi involves a 54-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. The 51 close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far.

As of 27 April, a total of 120 cases have been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A (H7N9) in the Mainland, which included Zhejiang (45 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (27 cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (four cases), Jiangxi (three cases), Beijing (one case), Shandong (one case), Fujian (one case) and Hunan (one case).

The Centre for Health Protection verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission on 26 April three human cases of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Jiangsu, two in Jiangxi, one in Fujian and one in Zhejiang. The three cases in Jiangsu involve three men aged 49, 36 and 60 who are receiving treatment in hospital and their respective condition is stable, serious and critical. The two cases in Jiangxi involve a 69-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman who are receiving treatment in hospital. Their condition is critical. The 24 close contacts of them are asymptomatic so far. The case in Fujian involves a 65-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. The 37 close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far. The case in Zhejiang involves a 38-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is serious.

As of 26 April, a total of 118 cases have been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A (H7N9) in the Mainland, which included Zhejiang (45 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (27 cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (four cases), Jiangxi (two cases), Beijing (one case), Shandong (one case) and Fujian (one case).

The Department of Health of Jiangxi Province of Mainland notified a confirmed human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) involving a 69-year-old man.

Mainland: Avian Influenza, human

The Centre for Health Protection verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission on 25 April one human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) in Henan and two in Zhejiang. The case in Henan involves a 56-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is critical. The seven close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far. The two cases in Zhejiang involve two women aged 50 and 60 who are receiving treatment in hospital. Their condition is serious.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health of Jiangxi Province is investigating a suspected human case of avian influenza A (H7N9) involving a 69-year-old man. Laboratory confirmation by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention is pending.

As of 25 April, a total of 111 cases have been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A (H7N9) in the Mainland, which included Zhejiang (44 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (24 cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (four cases), Beijing (one case) and Shandong (one case).

Taiwan: Avian Influenza, human

The Centre for Health Protection noted a confirmed imported human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Taiwan on 24 April involving a 53-year-old man who worked in Suzhou, Jiangsu, from March 28 to April 9. He is in hospital and his condition is serious.

As of 24 April, a total of 108 cases had been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A(H7N9) on the Mainland, including Zhejiang (42 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (24 cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (three cases), Beijing (one case), and Shandong (one case).

The World Organisation for Animal Health received notification from Mainland China that low pathogenic Avian Influenza virus subtype H7N9 was detected in one sample of pigeon from a poultry farm in Haian, Nantong, Jiangsu.

Romania: Anthrax

An 82-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Iasi, Romania, suspected of being infected with anthrax.

Germany: Avian Influenza, poultry

Two cases of H5N1 avian influenza virus infection was reported in Osnabrück, Germany. Of 25,070 susceptible birds, 20 were found dead and the rest of them were destroyed.

Angola: Cholera [Update]

As of 7 April, 1050 Cholera cases with 18 deaths were reported in Luanda, Angola since January 2013. The provinces most affected were Cunene (339), Uije (286), Luanda (170), and Benguela (149). The most deaths, 7, were registered in Luanda.

Worldwide: Dengue Fever

As of 17 April, Cambodia, Lao PDR, New Caledonia, Singapore and Vietnam have reported more cases of dengue fever in 2013 than 2012 for the same time period. Singapore is seeing continuing increasing levels and Malaysia and Lao PDR are seeing sustained levels. However, the recent trend is declining in Australia, Cambodia, New Caledonia and the Philippines.

The case in Shandong involves a 36-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is critical. The nine close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far. The two cases in Zhejiang involve two men aged 62 and 84 who are receiving treatment in hospital. Their condition is critical. The case in Anhui involves a 91-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. His condition is serious. The 35 close contacts of him are asymptomatic so far.

As of 23 April, a total of 108 cases have been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A (H7N9) in Zhejiang (42 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (24 cases), Anhui (four cases), Henan (three cases), Beijing (one case) and Shandong (one case).

The Jiangsu case involves a 68-year-old man who is receiving treatment in hospital. He is stable. The two cases in Zhejiang involve a 54-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man who are receiving treatment in hospital. Their condition is stable.

Meanwhile, the Health Department of Shandong Province is investigating a suspected human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) involving a 36-year-old man. Laboratory confirmation by the Chinese Center for Disease Control & Prevention is pending.

As of 22 April, a total of 104 cases have been laboratory confirmed with avian influenza A(H7N9) in Zhejiang (40 cases), Shanghai (33 cases), Jiangsu (24 cases), Anhui (three cases), Henan (three cases) and Beijing (one case).
