Mainland: Avian Influenza, human

The National Health and Family Planning Commission of the Mainland announced on 31 March that a total of 3 confirmed human cases of H7N9 Avian Influenza were reported in Shanghai and Anhui. Two cases were reported in Shanghai and they were two men aged 87 and 27, who developed symptoms on February 19 and 27 and passed away on March 4 and 10 respectively. One case was reported in Anhui and the patient is a 35-year-old woman who developed symptoms on 15 March. She is now in critical condition. No epidemiological link between the three cases was identified. So far, no abnormality was detected among the 88 close contacts of three cases.

In Peru, a fatal human case of Yellow Fever was registered in Sandia province.

Haiti: Cholera

The cholera epidemic in Haiti, which emerged in October 2010, has caused up to 27 Mar 2013 the deaths of 8 053 people and a total of 651 250 cases.

Germany: Novel Coronavirus Infection

A case of Novel Coronavirus infection has been diagnosed in Germany. The patient was a 73-year-old male from United Arab Emirates, who was transferred from a hospital in Abu Dhabi to Munich by air ambulance on 19 March 2013. He died on 26 March 2013.

United Kingdom: Novel Coronavirus Infection [Update]

In the United Kingdom, the index patient in the family cluster reported on 11 February 2013 with travel history to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia prior to his illness, has died. To date, WHO has been informed of a global total of 17 confirmed cases of human infection with nCoV, including 11 deaths.

Egypt: Avian Influenza, human

A 40-year-old woman from Menofia governorate in Egypt who became ill on 3 March 2013 after contact with sick poultry tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza.

Worldwide: Dengue Fever

There was increasing number of cases of Dengue Fever reported in Bangkok, Thailand with over 2000 cases recorded.

In South America, increasing number of cases of Dengue Fever was detected particularly in Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.

Myanmar: Typhoid Fever

Three Taiwanese travelers who had been to Myanmar were tested positive for Typhoid Fever in Feb 2013. They visited Myanmar in December 2012 and developed symptoms in January 2013.

An outbreak of Typhoid Fever was detected in Harare, capital city of Zimbabwe. Seven people have died of the infection in 6 months.

United Kingdom: Cryptosporidiosis

300 shoppers were infected with Cryptosporidia after consumption of salads from 2 major supermarket chains in the United Kingdom.
