Travel Health News Digest (16 July 2007) Mainland (Beijing): Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease On 12 July, Beijing Municipal Health Bureau reported 1 025 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in the recent one week. A total of 4 657 people have been infected in the city so far this year, 83 percent of them were children under the age of 5. The health authorities said that the number of infection would continue to rise.

Outbreaks of Dengue Fever have been hitting almost all provinces in Cambodia and have killed 138 of the 12 700 children infected with the disease so far this year. Last year, there were 12 300 cases including 116 deaths.

Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human In Banten Province of Indonesia, a 6-year-old girl who died on 8 July has been tested positive for H5N1 Avian Influenza. The dead chicken near her school were also found infected by the same virus. She was the 102nd confirmed human case of Avian Influenza infection in this country with a death toll reaching 81.

Vietnam: Avian Influenza, poultry In Vietnam, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that outbreaks of H5N1 Avian Influenza have been found among the poultry in Dien Bien District of Dien Bien Province in the north and Dam Doi District of Ca Mau Province in the south. Avian Influenza has hit 20 Vietnamese cities and provinces since early May this year.

There were 24 255 cases of Dengue Fever in Vietnam in the first half of this year, which was 23 percent higher than that in same period of last year. Among the cases this year, 19 000 lived in the southern provinces like Dong Thap, Kien Giang and An Giang Provinces of the Mekong Delta.

Czech Republic: Avian Influenza, poultry Tests confirmed H5N1 Avian Influenza virus in the poultry at two farms in the eastern Czech Republic, bringing the number of outbreaks in poultry to four. Health authorities were preparing to cull all the 71 000 poultry in the farms.

In Switzerland, 414 cases of Measles have been reported since the beginning of this year. The Canton of Luzern was seriously hit, with 236 reported cases so far. Most cases were children and adolescents. Almost all cases were unvaccinated.

Pakistan: Australian student contracted Poliomyelitis The first case of Poliomyelitis in Australia since 1986 was recently reported. He was a 22-year-old male student living in Melbourne and had been home in Pakistan before onset. He was admitted to hospital with symptoms including fever, vomiting, and muscle stiffness. His condition was improving. Health authorities were trying to track down the 249 passengers who shared his Thai Airlines TG999 flight from Bangkok to Melbourne on 2 July 2007. Pakistan is one of the 4 remaining countries in the world considered endemic for Poliomyelitis, the other 3 countries are India, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

As at 3 July, there were 90 cases of Poliomyelitis in India, which exceeded the 73 cases reported during the same period in 2006.

As at 3 July, there were 115 cases of in Poliomyelitis in Nigeria, which was much lower than the 526 cases reported during the same period last year.

In the first 4 months of this year, Brazil reported 246 833 cases of Dengue Fever, which was 20 percent higher than the corresponding period in 2006. Among them, 288 cases developed Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and 38 died. In the State of Sao Paulo, 52 566 cases of Dengue Fever have been reported by the end of June this year, which was greater than the 51 566 cases reported in the entire year of 2006. Currently, at least 90 of the 645 Sao Paulo municipalities were faced with Dengue Fever epidemics.

During the first 6 months of this year, there were 6 870 cases of Dengue Fever in Costa Rica, doubling that of the same period last year. Among them, 70 people developed Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. Limon was the most seriously affected province, with 856 confirmed cases recorded.

The number of Dengue Fever cases reported in Honduras has markedly increased during the recent week. About 5 000 people were infected and over 200 developed Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. The total number of cases recorded so far this year almost doubled that of the same period last year.
