Travel Health News Digest (18 June 2007) Bangladesh: Avian Influenza, poultry (update) In Bangladesh, Avian Influenza continued to affect poultry farms. Up to 25 May, 23 outbreaks have been reported since it was first reported in March. The latest outbreak occurred in a village in Panchbib Upazila. More than 5 000 chickens and ducks were culled.

In the first 4 months this year, the number of Dengue Fever cases in Brazil increased by 20 percent compared with the same period last year. There were 246 833 cases of the disease, among whom 288 patients contracted Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and 38 patients died.

The health official of Egypt had announced a new human case of H5N1 Avian Influenza. The case was a 4-year-old girl from Qena of southern Egypt. She developed symptoms on 7 June and was admitted to hospital on 10 June. She was in a stable condition. Initial investigation indicated that she had exposure to dead poultry. Of the 36 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 15 had been fatal.

In India, there was an alarming rise in suspected Dengue Fever cases in Mira-Bhayandar municipality area of Mumbai. Many of them have been diagnosed as Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever. The causes were apparently due to poor sanitation and stagnant water.

Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 Avian Influenza. A 26-year-old male from Riau Province developed symptoms on 3 June and died in hospital on 12 June. Investigations into the source of his infection indicated exposure to sick and dead poultry. Of the 100 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 80 have been fatal.

Malaysia: Avian Influenza, poultry In Malaysia, there was an outbreak of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) infection in a village of Selangor on 2 June, causing death of 67 chickens. Disinfection was performed and 4 127 birds were culled.

A total of 994 Dengue Fever cases were reported in Malaysia last week. Among them, Selangor reported 338 cases, Kuala Lumpur 127 cases, and Kelantan 80.

Myanmar: Avian Influenza, poultry In Myanmar, an outbreak of Avian Influenza was reported in a chicken farm in Bago early this month. Laboratory tests confirmed that some of the chickens were infected with Avian Influenza H5N1. About a thousand of birds were culled.

Singapore authority reported the second fatal case of Dengue Fever this year. The victim was a 63-year-old man living in Hougang. He consulted the doctor for fever, but his condition worsened and he died from dengue shock syndrome on 6 June. So far this year, a total of 2 472 cases of Dengue Fever were reported in Singapore, which was nearly 90 percent higher than the corresponding period in 2006, among them, 293 cases were reported in the recent week.

Health officials in Taipei of Taiwan confirmed the second imported case of Measles this year. The case travelled to Japan in mid-May when there was an outbreak of Measles.

Taiwan confirmed an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Sapovirus. A total of 55 faculty members of a college in Taipei County exhibited symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea in May 2007. The test for Sapovirus showed positive results in 7 out of 8 faecal specimens.
[Editor's note: Sapoviruses, like the noroviruses, are caliciviruses, and both of which are the leading causes of acute viral gastroenteritis in humans. The virus is often acquired through faecally contaminated food or water. The best way to prevent it is to observe good personal and food hygiene. Hand-washing is essential after defaecation, before preparing and serving food. Food should be well cooked and water should be boiled.]
As at 7 June, a total of 11 574 Dengue Fever cases have been reported in Thailand, especially in central, northeastern, and southern regions. Fourteen people died of the disease.

United Kingdom: Avian Influenza (H7N2), poultry Health officials of United Kingdom confirmed an outbreak of H7N2 low pathogenic Avian Influenza which affected poultry on a farm near St. Helens in Merseyside on 8 June. All the affected poultry had been culled. This outbreak was believed to be related to the one happened in North Wales in May. [Editor¡¦s Note: H7N2 is a low pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza.]

In USA, a 50-year-old woman from south of Santa Fe of New Mexico contracted septicaemic Plague. She recovered after hospitalisation. This was the fourth confirmed case of Plague in New Mexico since late April this year resulting in one death. Eight confirmed cases with 2 deaths were recorded last year.

Vietnam: Avian Influenza, human (Update) Vietnam's Health Ministry confirmed 3 new human cases of H5N1 Avian Influenza. The patients lived in Thanh Hoa, Ha Nam and Ha Tay provinces respectively. The 20-year-old male patient from Hay Tay died of the disease last week. He was the first fatal case of H5N1 Avian Influenza infection in Vietnam since late 2005. A total of 5 cases have been reported in this country since May 2007 and 43 deaths have reported since the outbreak started in 2003
