Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human On 17 August 2007, the Ministry of Health of Indonesia confirmed a domestic helper from Tangerang regency of Banten province died of H5N1 Avian Influenza on 14 August.

Both the Central Sulawesi Province and Maluku Province of Indonesia have been subject to outbreaks of internal violence. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom advised against all travel to these two provinces.

As of 4 August 2007, 31 279 cases of Dengue Fever were reported, among them, 67 people died of the disease. In the same period of 2006, there were only 21 117 cases.

Vietnam: Avian Influenza, poultry In Vietnam, health authority confirmed an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza which killed 89 chickens and ducks in a farm in the northern province of Cao Bang. Earlier this month, another outbreak was reported among the poultry of a farm in the northwestern province of Dien Bien.

In India, an outbreak of Chikungunya Fever was recently reported in West Bengal. Across the state, thousands of people have been admitted to the hospitals due to the disease since May this year.

In Ceara state of Brazil, 17 231 cases of Dengue Fever and 178 cases of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever have been reported so far this year. The number of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever has already exceeded the total number in the whole 2006. Fortaleza, the capital of the state, was seriously hit by the disease with 6 822 cases of Dengue Fever and 91 cases of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever.

Peru suffered from an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale at 18:41 on 15 August 2007. The epicentre was located south of Lima, around Pisco on the coast. The worst damage occurred in Pisco, and neighbouring towns between Chincha and Ica. Access along the Panamericiana highway between Lima and Ica was blocked, and water, electricity and telephone services were affected.

Central America and Caribbean: Hurricane Warning As Hurricane Dean was moving across The Caribbean, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom has advised against all travel to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and all but essential travel to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

Dominican Republic: Norovirus Infection In Dominican Republic, a large gastroenteritis outbreak took place in Bahia Principe San Juan Resort in Puerto Plata affecting more than 600 persons. The outbreak was caused by Norovirus Infection.

The number of Dengue Fever cases in Puerto Rico has markedly increased recently with about 300 cases reported in the first week of August. Up to now, 2 343 confirmed cases has been reported, which was more than double the number of cases reported in the same period last year.

Russia: West Nile Virus Infection, human In the Southern Federal District of Russia, 3 and 7 cases of West Nile Virus Infection has been registered in Rostov Oblast and Astrakhan Oblast respectively so far in 2007. The peak season of this disease usually occurs in the summer months from July to September in the country. Experts strongly advise protection from mosquito bites.

A total of 16 320 cases of Cholera with 420 deaths have been reported in 16 out of Angola's 18 provinces since the start of 2007. The capital Luanda, Benguela and Cabinda provinces are the most affected areas.
In the Cholera outbreak in Nalon Fong, a suburb of the Tamale metropolis in the Northern Region of Ghana, 19 people died.
In Guinea, 1240 cases of Cholera with 47 deaths have been reported so far this year. The most affected areas were Gueckedou in the southeast, and the capital, Conakry.
In eastern Sudan, a Cholera outbreak in the eastern Gedaref state and Kassala town killed 49 people and affected 710 persons.

As of 8 Aug 2007, 52 cases of Malaria were registered in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The majority of the patients were inhabitants of new residential areas of Bosogo, Olmo and Kalys-Ordo, located close to a mosquito-infested reservoir.

In Kyrgyzstan, 5 people from the village of Gavrilovka, Sokuluksky district, Chuysk region, Bishkek were hospitalized because of Anthrax. All the patients had contact history with infected cattle.

In Jordan, 237 cases of Food Poisoning caused by Salmonella and related to consumption of chicken shawarma were reported in a refugee camp in Baqaa. A total of 120 cases were still being treated in hospitals.
