Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Philippines: Typhoid fever

Regional office of Department of Health in the Philippines has reported a total of 68 cases of Typhoid in the Calabarzon Region in 2021.

Nigeria: Lassa Fever [Update]

4 June 2021

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reported 5 additional confirmed Lassa Fever cases in the last week of May, bringing the total to 286 cases including 58 deaths, so far this year.

Singapore: Dengue Fever [Update]

3 June 2021

As of 2 Jun, Singapore’s National Environment Agency reported 2,822 Dengue cases.

Australia: Meningococcal Infection

3 June 2021

So far this year, 4 cases of invasive Meningococcal Infection have been reported in South Australia. Among these cases, 2 are serogroup B and 2 are serogroup W.

A total of 5 cases were reported in 2020. Of these cases, 3 were serogroup B and 2 were serogroup Y.

Sweden: Salmonella [Update]

3 June 2021

The Sweden Public Health Agency reported an outbreak of Salmonella. A total of 36 confirmed cases were recorded during 4 April - 15 May in 13 different regions across the country.

This outbreak is being considered as international, since several countries in Europe have identified cases of the same variant of salmonella.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Plague [Update]

3 June 2021

Health officials in Democratic Republic of the Congo reported that since 22 April, 19 suspected pneumonic Plague cases including 11 deaths has been recorded in Ituri Province.

Thailand: Rabies

3 June 2021

The Thailand authority has reported the first fatal human Rabies infection this year. The case was reported in Surin province, she developed symptoms of Rabies on 7 May and died soon after laboratory diagnosis.

In 2020, three cases and deaths were reported.

Through the end of March, Philippines has reported 17,630 Dengue cases with 63 deaths.
