Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Singapore: Dengue Fever [Update]

As of 22 April, Singapore's National Environment Agency reported 5,459 cases of Dengue Fever infection.

Guinea: Lassa Fever

25 April 2022

Guinea Minister of Health and Public Hygiene declared a Lassa Fever outbreak in the country after the confirmation of a case in Guéckédou.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola Virus Disease

25 April 2022

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola after one lethal case of infection was confirmed in Mbandaka, a city in the north-western Equateur Province.

Pakistan: Poliomyelitis [Update]

25 April 2022

One case of Type-1 wild Poliovirus infection was confirmed in a 15 month old child from North Waziristan on 22 April by the Pakistan National polio laboratory in Islamabad. The laboratory also confirmed detection of a positive environmental sample collected on 5 April from Bannu district of the same province. Both these viruses are closely related to each other.

Japan: Syphilis [Update]

25 April 2022

In 2021, Japan recorded a historical high of 7,873 cases of Syphilis infection over the last 50 years. Women in their 20s formed the largest group of patients.

As of 13 April 2022, 2,592 cases were reported in the country. Among these, Tokyo reported 781 cases.

Brazil: Dengue Fever [Update]

From August 2021 to date, 80,004 cases of Dengue Fever infection and 5 deaths were reported in Paraná, Brazil.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Plague [Update]

22 April 2022

As of 17 April, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 56 cases of bubonic Plague, including two deaths. Almost all cases were reported in Lokpa.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo reported 1,088 cases of Monkeypox infection during the first quarter of 2022.

Argentina: Trichinosis

22 April 2022

A total of 59 cases of Trichinosis were reported in Córdoba province, Argentina.

Zambia: Schistosomiasis

An outbreak of Schistosomiasis was first reported on 7 April in Chirundu, Zambia and ultimately affected some 150 children.

As of 18 April, Singapore's National Environment Agency reported 4,861 cases of Dengue Fever infection.

Cameroon: Cholera

19 April 2022

In the past 5 months, a total of 3,407 cases of Cholera infection and 83 deaths have been reported in Cameroon.

Brazil: Yellow Fever

The State Health Department of Tocantins, Brazil, reported 1 lethal case of Yellow Fever infection. The victim is an unvaccinated tourist, jointed sport fishing between Peixe, São Salvador and Paranã in the south of the state.

Panama: Hantavirus [Update]

So far this year, 8 cases of Hantavirus infection have been reported in Los Santos, Panama.

Israel: Poliomyelitis [Update]

19 April 2022

According to the Israel Ministry of Health, 7 asymptomatic cases of circulating vaccine-derived Poliovirus type 3 infection and one paralysis case have been reported since early March. All are not vaccinated.

Kazakhstan: Anthrax

19 April 2022

Two cases of Anthrax infection were detected in the Tyulkubas district of the Turkestan region, Kazakhstan.
