Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Monkeypox when travelling abroad

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by Monkeypox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May this year, multiple outbreaks were reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

United Arab Emirates: Monkeypox

The Ministry of Health and Prevention has announced the first case of Monkeypox in the United Arab Emirates. The case is a 29-year-old woman who arrived from West Africa.

Canada: Monkeypox [Update]

As of 23 May, Department of Health and Social Services of Canada reported 15 confirmed cases of Monkeypox in Quebec.

The Finland National Institute for Health and Welfare reported one suspected Monkeypox case in the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola Virus Disease [Update]

One more fatal case of Ebola infection was reported in Equateur province in western Democratic Republic of the Congo. Adding the total to 4 confirmed and 1 probable cases, so far this year.

The forth case of Poliovirus infection was confirmed in a 13 month old child from Mir Ali on 23 May by the Pakistan National polio laboratory in Islamabad.

In the first four months of 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 1,238 Monkeypox cases, including 57 deaths.

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone has declared an outbreak of human Anthrax in the country after confirmed 3 cutaneous Anthrax cases in Karene district.

As of 24 May, Singapore's National Environment Agency reported 10,118 cases of Dengue Fever infection.

Germany: Monkeypox [Update]

25 May 2022

As of 23 May, 5 cases of Monkeypox were reported in Germany.

What is special about these cases is that these cases had not traveled to West and Central Africa regions where the virus is endemic and that many transmissions apparently took place in the context of sexual activities, especially in men who have had sexual contact with other men.

Malaysia: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease [Update]

As of 21 May, the Malaysia Ministry of Health reported a total of 47,209 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. This is an increase of 20 times compared with the same period last year.

USA: Meningococcal Meningitis

25 May 2022

Since December 2021, 35 cases of Meningococcal Meningitis were recorded in Florida, USA. Of the 35 cases, 20 cases were identify as bisexual or men who have sex with men.

USA: Monkeypox

25 May 2022

Health officials in Salt Lake County, Utah, USA reported 2 probable Monkeypox cases, both patients became symptomatic after traveling internationally earlier this month to an area with Monkeypox cases.

Another case was reported in Washington areas. The case is an adult male with international travel in the past month to a country that has also reported Monkeypox cases.

One case of suspected Monkeypox infection was reported in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The patient visited Spain during 28 April to 16 May, 2022.

In Portugal, 14 more cases of Monkeypox infection have been confirmed, adding to a total of 37 confirmed cases so far in the North, Lisbon and Tagus Valley and Algarve regions.
