Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Monkeypox when travelling abroad

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by Monkeypox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May this year, multiple outbreaks were reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Singapore: Dengue Fever [Update]

As of 30 September, Singapore's National Environment Agency reported 28,120 cases of Dengue Fever infection.

Taiwan: Dengue Fever [Update]

3 October 2022

As of 29 September, Taiwan reported 58 cases of Dengue Fever infection.

Cuba: Monkeypox [Update]

3 October 2022

On 1 October, Cuba's Ministerio de Salud Pública reported the 4th confirmed Monkeypox case in Cienfuegos province. The individual is a health care worker who had direct contact with the third case.

Nigeria: Monkeypox [Update]

3 October 2022

As of 6 September, Nigeria reported 318 confirmed cases of Monkeypox infection. Among these, 63 cases were reported in Lagos.

Uganda: Ebola [Update]

As of 30 September, 38 cases of Ebola infection were reported in Uganda.

Mauritania: Rift Valley Fever [Update]

To date, Mauritania health authorities reported 28 cases of Rift Valley Fever infection with 16 deaths.

Pakistan: Dengue Fever

3 October 2022

So far, health officials in Sindh province of southern Pakistan reported 9,826 cases of Dengue Fever with 39 deaths, about three-quarters of the cases were reported in September. Of this total, 6,053 confirmed cases were reported in Karachi.

France: Dengue Fever [Update]

As of 26 September, France recorded 57 local cases of Dengue Feverin the Occitania and the Paca region.

Malaysia: Dengue Fever [Update]

As of 24 September, the Malaysia Ministry of Health report 42,084 cases of Dengue Fever infection with 24 deaths. Number of cases increased by 116.7% when compared with same period last year.

To date, health officials in Puerto Rico reported 72 suspected cases of Leptospirosis after the passage of Hurricane Fiona.

In United States of America, the Minnesota Department of Health reported 13 cases of Measles among unvaccinated children in the Twin Cities area since June this year.

Health officials in Sindh province in southeastern Pakistan reported 39 cases of Diphtheria, including 10 deaths in children during the past two months in Karachi and other areas.

Costa Rica: Malaria [Update]

In Costa Rica, 318 Malaria cases were reported in the Northern Zone. Most of the cases were reported in Los Chiles canton with 286 infections plus 15 more cases reside on the Nicaraguan side.

South Africa: Rabies [Update]

27 September 2022

As of 25 August, South Africa reported 10 confirmed Rabies cases including 5 from the Eastern Cape province, 3 from Limpopo province and 2 from KwaZuluNatal province. Furthermore, 5 deaths from probable Rabies have been reported from the Eastern Cape Province.
