Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks were reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

USA: Hepatitis A [Update]

Health officials in San Diego, USA reported on a rise in Hepatitis A this year with 28 reported so far this year.

Vietnam: Rabies

Over the past 5 years, Rabies has killed 410 people in Vietnam, over 2.7 million people have to receive preventive treatment, affecting public health and cause great economic loss.

Argentina: Dengue Fever [Update]

From July 31, 2022 to May 6, 2023, the Argentina Ministry of Health reported 93,694 total cases of Dengue, of which 87,405 are locally acquired. The number of dengue related fatalities remains at 56.

Paraguay: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

17 May 2023

According to health officials in Paraguay, there were 3,845 Chikungunya cases reported in the last three weeks, mostly from the Central department (22 percent) and the city of Asunción (21 percent) as cases continue to trend down. 217 people have died from chikungunya since October.

Japan: Mpox (monkeypox) [Update]

17 May 2023

Japan health officials reported eight additional Mpox cases from May 1, 2023 to May 7, 2023, bringing the country total to 135. The latest cases include seven from Tokyo and one from Kanagawa Prefecture.

Chile: Hantavirus

17 May 2023

Health officials of the Los Lagos Region, Chile confirmed a new case of Hantavirus in the rural area of the commune of Puerto Montt.

The patient is a 10-year-old resident of the Piedra Azul sector. This is the second case in a child this year.

Columbia: Dengue Fever [Update]

17 May 2023

The Colombia Instituto Nacional de Salud reported 32,206 total Dengue cases through April 29 this year. 108 probable deaths from dengue have been reported, of which 18 were confirmed.

Japan: Measles

17 May 2023

Japan health minister reported 2 confirmed Measles cases in Tokyo, the first such cases in the capital since 2020.
