Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks were reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Thailand: Dengue Fever [Update]

29 April 2024

The Thailand Bureau of Epidemiology has reported 26,527 total Dengue cases since the beginning of the year, an 123 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023 (11,885).In addition, the deaths reported risen from 13 last year to 22 this year to date.

Vietnam: Pertussis

29 April 2024

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health of Vietnam, from the beginning of 2024 until now, the country has recorded 127 cases of Pertussis, an increase of 7.9 times compared to the same period in 2023.In Hanoi, according to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), during the week (April 19 - 26), the city had 15 more cases of Pertussis in 11 districts, an increase of 14 cases compared to the previous week.

Netherlands: Gonorrhoea

In 2023, the number of diagnoses of Gonorrhoea in Netherlands increased by 31% compared to 2022. The increase is greatest among women and heterosexual men under the age of 25.

France: Dengue Fever [Update]

26 April 2024

Between January 1 and April 19, 2024, 1,679 cases of imported dengue fever were notified to Public Health France compared to 131 over the same period in 2023. Over this period, 82% of cases returned from the French West Indies.

Brazil: Dengue Fever [Update]

26 April 2024

The Brazil Ministry of Health reports 3,852,901 probable cases of dengue registered across the country through April 25.

In addition, 1,792 confirmed deaths from dengue have been reported in 2024, in addition to 2,216 deaths under investigation.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Mpox (Monkeypox) [Update]

24 April 2024

Scientists in Africa identified a distinct mpox clade, fueling a severe outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They proposed that the clade be named clade 1b and warned that urgent measures are needed to contain it due to its pandemic potential.

Officials from Samoa Ministry of Health announced the declaration of a dengue fever outbreak in Samoa. There have been more than 250 cases in total, with the majority of cases on the mainland, northwest of Upolu where most of the population lives.

Brazil: Cholera

Brazil reports 1st autochthonous cholera case in nearly 20 years in the city of Salvador in Bahia State.

Iraq: Measles

24 April 2024

The Director-General of Public Health at the Iraq Ministry of Health, Riyad Al-Halafi, said that "the ministry recorded more than 27 000 cases of measles, 96% of which were among the unvaccinated, and 4% were among the vaccinated who did not complete the 2 doses."

In addition, he noted that 43 measles deaths have been reported, of which 42 of the fatalities were unvaccinated.

Australia: pertussis

24 April 2024

Between January and April 2024, a total of 1,537 pertussis cases were reported in NSW, Australia. Notifications of pertussis cases began to increase in 2023 and are expected to continue rising.

The 1,537 cases reported through April 13 is more than what was reported in any other of the past four full years.
