Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Philippines: Mpox (monkeypox) [Update]

In a follow-up on the Mpox situation in Iloilo City, Philippines, the Iloilo City Health Office announced that the city has recorded four confirmed and two suspected cases of Mpox as of June 2, 2025.

In a follow-up on the Leptospirosis outbreak in the canton of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, declared nearly 10 days ago, the Institute of Public Health now puts the outbreak total to 43 since the first infection was recorded on May 15.

Reunion: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

Since the end of April, Réunion health authorities report a phase of epidemic decline, although the virus remains active throughout the island. Confirmed Chikungunya cases have fallen below 2,000 since Week 18, after peaking at over 7,500 in Week 13/2025.

In a follow-up on the Measles outbreak in Morocco this year, after reporting a backlog of cases (19,947) since March 1 through May 10, the total measles cases reported since the beginning of the year now stands at 40,033.

Mongolia: Measles

Mongolia recorded 119 new Measles cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the national total to 3,161, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases reported on May 25.

USA: Measles [Update]

The Colorado Department of Public Health and their partners in El Paso and Arapahoe counties have reported three more Measles cases linked to exposure at Denver International Airport and on a Turkish Airlines flight, raising the outbreak total to six.

USA: Salmonella [Update]

3 June 2025

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to whole cucumbers has grown from 26 to 45 cases in the past 2 weeks. Three more states are now affected in the outbreak, raising the number of states reporting cases to 18.
