Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad
Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad
Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa.
It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.
Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer
e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact
with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

USA: Malaria

A woman in
Pierce County, Washington was diagnosed with
malaria on August 2 without recent travel history, potentially marking the first known locally transmitted malaria case in
Washington state if confirmed.
Italy: Chikungunya Fever
11 August 2025
Italy reported its first autochthonous case of
chikungunya in a 64-year-old woman from
Veneto region with no recent travel history to endemic areas.
Taiwan: Chikungunya Fever

Taiwanese woman in her 40s was diagnosed with imported
chikungunya after traveling to
Guangdong Province, China, where over 7,000 cumulative cases have been reported in a severe outbreak.
Italy: West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus cases in
Italy have rapidly increased to 173 confirmed infections with 11 deaths since the beginning of the year, up from 89 cases on July 31.
Mexico: Measles

Mexico has reported 3,961 confirmed
measles cases across 20 states with 14 deaths, with
Chihuahua state accounting for 93% of cases and 13 deaths.
Samoa: Dengue Fever

Samoa reported 1,446 clinically diagnosed
dengue cases in one week with 342 laboratory confirmations, bringing the year’s total to 5,670 cases and 4 deaths.
Norway: Hepatitis A

Israel: Polio

Polio virus has been detected in wastewater samples from multiple sites in
Jerusalem District and
Central Region, prompting health authorities to urge unvaccinated individuals to get vaccinated.
China: Chikungunya Fever

Shunde District in
Foshan City, China reported 98 new confirmed
chikungunya cases on August 9, mainly distributed in
Lecong Town and
Beijiao Town, all classified as mild cases.
Democratic Republic of The Congo: Mpox (monkeypox) [Update]

Mpox continues to strain the
Democratic Republic of the Congo’s health system. Between 1 January and 31 May 2025, the country reported more than 12 000 suspected cases and 22 deaths, accounting for over 50% of all mpox cases in Africa this year.
France: Dengue Fever, Chikungunya Fever and West Nile Virus Infection [Update]

In a follow-up on the locally transmitted arbovirus infections in
France, as of August 5, French health authorities have reported 63 locally transmitted
chikungunya, 9 local
dengue fever cases and 3
West Nile virus cases.
Taiwan: Syphilis

According to
Taiwan CDC statistics,
syphilis infection showed an upward trend, with 5,826 new cases reported from January to July of this year, a 7% increase compared to the 5,456 cases reported in the same period last year.
Cambodia: Avian influenza [Update]

The
Cambodia Ministry of Health reports another case of H5N1
avian influenza in a 6-year-old girl from Sre Nong commune, Takeo province.
Chad and Republic of the Congo: Cholera
7 August 2025
The Chad Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of cholera in Chokoyane health district, Ouaddai province on July 24. 77 cases (3 confirmed; 74 suspected) and 4 deaths (case fatality rate: 5.19%) have been reported from one province in Chad.
On 26 July 2025, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of the Congo declared an outbreak of cholera in Sinoa village, Ile-Mbamou health district, Brazzaville department. A total of 187 suspected cases, 21 probable cases, including 6 confirmed and 21 deaths (case fatality rate: 11.2%), were reported from two departments: Brazzaville and Congo-Oubangui.
USA: Dengue Fever [Update]
7 August 2025
Florida state health officials reported four additional autochthonous
dengue fever cases in Brevard County during the past week. This brings the total locally acquired dengue cases in the state to eight—Brevard (6) and Miami-Dade Counties (2).
Democratic Republic of the Congo: Measles [Update]

A total of 4,057 cases of
measles, including 122 deaths, have been recorded in
South Kivu province since the beginning of 2025.
Argentina: Leishmaniasis [Update]

In
Argentina, since the beginning of the year through July 26, 2025, 9 cases of visceral
leishmaniasis were reported, 5 in the Northeastern Argentina region and 4 in the Northwestern Argentina.
Mexico: Measles [Update]

As of July 25, 3,730 confirmed cases of
measles have been reported in
Mexico, with Chihuahua accounting for 3,490 cases—93% of the national total.
Canada: West Nile Virus Infection
7 August 2025
Toronto Public Health is reporting its first laboratory-confirmed human case of
West Nile virus in an adult resident in 2025.
Hong Kong: Chikungunya Fever [Update]
7 August 2025
The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health,
Hong Kong announced on August 6 that three new cases of
chikungunya fever had been recorded, all of which were imported cases. The first case involves a 79-year-old female with good past health living in Southern District. Initial investigations revealed that the patient travelled to Foshan in Guangdong Province between July 1 and 31. The second and third case involve a 55-year-old man with underlying illnesses and his 10-year-old son with good past health. They live in Kwai Tsing District. Initial investigations revealed that both patients travelled to Bangladesh between July 12 and August 3, and arrived Hong Kong on August 3.

Shunde Health Bureau reported 122 additional confirmed cases of
chikungunya fever in
Shunde District, Foshan City on August 5, mainly concentrated in Lecong Town and Beijiao Town, all of which are mild cases.
Macau: Chikungunya Fever [Update]
7 August 2025
The Director of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Division of the
Macau Health Bureau's CDC said that Macau has currently recorded eight confirmed cases of
chikungunya fever, six imported cases and two local cases.
USA: Measles [Update]
7 August 2025
In a weekly update today, the
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 23 more
measles cases, bringing the national total for the year to 1,356 cases, the most since the United States achieved measles elimination in 2000.

India: Nipah Virus Infection [Update]
7 August 2025
In an update on a
Nipah virus outbreak in
India’s Kerala state, the World Health Organization today said state health officials have notified the WHO of four cases since the middle of May, two of them fatal.
