Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad
Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad
Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa.
It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.
Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer
e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact
with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Italy: West Nile Virus Infection [Update]

In a follow-up on the
West Nile virus situation in
Italy, the National Institute of Health reports 102 additional human cases in the past week, bringing the total to 275 through August 14.
Mayotte: Malaria

According to Sante Publique France, for the first time since July 2020, twelve cases of locally acquired
malaria were recorded in
Mayotte: one in February, one in June and ten in July 2025.
USA: Vibrio vulnificus

State health officials in
Massachusetts issued a health alert due to an extremely rare case of
Vibrio vulnificus infection in the state. It is suspected the individual likely acquired from exposure to coastal water at a beach on Buzzards Bay.
USA: Legionnaires' Disease [Update]

In a follow-up on the
Legionnaires' disease outbreak affecting Central Harlem, according to the
NYC Health Department, as of today, 101 confirmed Legionnairess’ disease cases, including four deaths have been reported.
USA: Naegleria fowleri

Missouri state health officials report a case of an adult Missouri resident with a laboratory-confirmed infection of
Naegleria fowleri, aka the brain eating amoeba.
France: Chikungunya Fever and Dengue Fever [Update]
18 August 2025
According to French health authorities, the number of locally acquired
chikungunya cases has reached 115 as of August 12.
In addition, the local dengue fever cases in mainland France now stands at 11.
Brazil: Oropouche Fever [Update]
18 August 2025
In a follow-up on
Oropouche fever in
Brazil this year, the Ministry of Health reports 11,900 confirmed cases as of August 12, including five deaths and two other under investigation. This a near 2,000 case increase in the past three month.
Mainland China: Chikungunya Fever [Update]
18 August 2025
Shunde Health Bureau reported 18 additional confirmed cases of
chikungunya fever in
Shunde District, Foshan City on August 16, mainly concentrated in Lecong Town and Beijiao Town, all of which are mild cases.
USA: Measles [Update]
18 August 2025
More than 10,000
measles cases, 18 of them fatal, have been reported across 10 countries in the
Americas this year, with the pace of infections 34 times higher than a year ago, the Pan American Health Organization said today.

Czech Republic: Hepatitis A [Update]
14 August 2025
Czech Republic has reported 1,053
hepatitis A cases in the first 7 months of 2025, the highest number in 15 years, with
Prague most affected (370 cases), followed by
Central Bohemian Region (181 cases) and
Moravian-Silesian Region (113 cases).
USA: Dengue [Update]
14 August 2025
Florida has reported 10 locally transmitted
dengue cases in 2025, with 8 cases in
Brevard County and 2 in
Miami-Dade County, predominantly DENV-3 serotype (7 cases) and one DENV-4 case.
Taiwan: Tularemia

Taiwan reported its first local
tularemia case since 2022, a woman in her 70s from
southern Taiwan who presented with fever, weakness, and chills, confirmed through whole genome sequencing.
Taiwan: Brucellosis

Taiwan reported its first imported
brucellosis case in nearly 10 years, a man in his 50s from
northern Taiwan who traveled to
Xinjiang in April and had contact with sheep and horses.
USA: Pertussis [Update]

Hawaii has reported 203
pertussis cases as of July 31, 2025, more than double the 84 cases in all of 2024, with highest rates on
Kauai,
Maui, and
Hawaii Island, primarily affecting infants and children.
USA: West Nile Virus [Update]

Chicago, Illinois has reported 3 human cases of
West Nile virus in patients aged 40-80 from the
Northwest and
South sides, with mosquitoes testing positive at higher rates than usual this year.
China: Chikungunya [Update]

Shunde District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province reported 55 new confirmed
chikungunya cases on August 12, mainly distributed in
Lecong Town and
Beijiao Town, all classified as mild cases.
