Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad
Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad
Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa.
It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.
Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer
e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact
with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Namibia: Malaria [Update]
19 May 2025
In
Namibia, health authorities report 6,710 additional
malaria cases and 15 deaths the week ending May 10 in 36 districts. This brings the total for the year to 66,872 cases and 91 deaths. This is also more than 70,000 cases since the outbreak began in November 2024.
United Kingdom: Cryptosporidiosis
19 May 2025
In a follow-up on the
cryptosporidium outbreak linked to visits to Cowbridge Farm Shop, Marlborough Grange Farm, Cross Ways, Cowbridge,
Wales, health officials reported seven new cases, bringing the outbreak total to 81 confirmed cases of the parasitic disease. 16 people required hospitalization for their illness.
Paraguay: Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever [Update]
19 May 2025
The
Paraguay General Directorate of Health Surveillance reports an average of 873 cases per week, or more than 16,000 cases of suspected
dengue across all regions of the
country in the first 19 weeks of 2025.
Concerning
chikungunya, there have been 22 reported cases of chikungunya. There is currently a chikungunya outbreak in the city of Villarrica, with four confirmed cases to date in the Centro, Rincón, and Santa Librada neighborhoods.
Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion, Somalia and Sri Lanka: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 2 travel notice for countries in the Indian Ocean region-
Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Somalia, and Sri Lanka due to outbreaks of
chikungunya.
USA: Measles [Update]
15 May 2025
The
Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced 8 more
measles cases, bringing the state's total to 56, of which 54 are part of an outbreak in the southwestern part of the state.
Canada: Measles [Update]
15 May 2025
Canada is experiencing a large
measles outbreak, with cases reported in four provinces, mostly Ontario and Alberta. Canada's latest update listed 1,506 total measles cases, including 329 new ones.
United Kingdom: Measles [Update]

In a follow-up on the
measles situation in
England in 2025 to date, the UK Health Security Agency now reports 320 laboratory confirmed measles, an increase of 107 cases since the last report on April 10.
Brazil: Oropouche Fever [Update]
15 May 2025
The
Brazil Ministry of Health reports 10,076 confirmed
Oropouche fever cases from the beginning of the year through May 13. In all of 2024, Brazil saw 13,853 cases.
Saudi Arabia: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome [Update]
15 May 2025
The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia reported nine cases of
Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection from March 1 to April 21 this year, including two fatalities.
Ukraine: Hepatitis A
15 May 2025
The Center for Public Health in
Ukraine reports a
hepatitis A outbreak in Kyiv, where at least 34 cases have been reported.
Panama: Malaria
15 May 2025
The
Panama Ministry of Health reports that two deaths from malaria have been recorded in the country this year. In 2023, 11,659 cases of
malaria were reported, and in 2024, a total of 15,109 cases were reported, representing a sustained increase in the transmission of this disease.
Reunion, Mayotte: Chikungunya Fever [Update]
15 May 2025
The World Health Organization reported that from the start of the outbreak in
Réunion in August 2024 through 4 May 2025, more than 47,500 confirmed
chikungunya cases, 12 deaths, and over 170,000 consultations for suspected chikungunya have been recorded on the island, while
Mayotte has detected its first locally transmitted cases in 19 years.
Mainland China: Avian Influenza [Update]

China has reported eight more H9N2
avian flu infections in people from four different areas (Hunan Province, Guizhou province, Yunnan province and Chongqing city), along with another H10N3 avian flu case in a resident of Guangxi province.
USA: Measles [Update]
15 May 2025
The
Texas Department of State Health Services today reported eight more
measles cases since its last update on May 9, including the first two from Dallas that are linked to the large outbreak in West Texas. The new cases lift the Texas outbreak total to 717 from 32 counties.
