Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

South Korea: Japanese Encephalitis

17 October 2025

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency requested compliance with preventive measures and vaccination participation by those eligible for vaccination, as the first case of Japanese encephalitis was confirmed on October 14.

New York state health authorities announced this week that a case of locally acquired Chikungunya has been confirmed in New York State- the first known indigenous case in the state and the first locally acquired case in the US since 2019.

The northwest African country of Mauritania is reporting an alarming rise in Rift Valley Fever infections, with cases being reported in 13 of the 15 regions of the country.

Senegal has reported 147 confirmed Rift Valley fever cases including 19 deaths, with 137 cases (93%) in the Saint-Louis region and remaining cases in Louga (4), Matam (5), and Fatick (1).

Brazil: Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever [Update]

Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state has reported 13,438 probable dengue cases with 8,172 confirmed and 18 deaths, affecting municipalities including Dois Irmãos do Buriti, Vicentina, and Naviraí.

It has reported 13,552 probable chikungunya cases with 7,430 confirmed and 16 deaths, including 73 cases in pregnant women.

Missouri has reported 16 human West Nile virus cases in 2025 with 15 hospitalizations and 3 deaths; nationally, the United States has recorded 1,433 cases across 42 states, with Colorado (241 cases) and Illinois (105 cases) most affected.
