Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

France: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

20 November 2025

France health authorities, in an update today, report a total of 804 locally acquired chikungunya cases year to date. 787 cases of chikungunya spread across 82 clusters, and 17 isolated cases of chikungunya for which the precise location of contamination could not be identified.

Vietnam: Influenza

20 November 2025

The Vietnam Ministry of Health has reported an increase in influenza cases in the past three months, while still only reporting half the total flu cases of 2024. According to information from the Ministry of Health, from the beginning of 2025 to now, the country has recorded more than 132,000 cases of seasonal flu, including 3 deaths.

USA: Measles [Update]

20 November 2025

The South Carolina Department of Public Health reported five additional measles cases in the Upstate outbreak (most concentrated in Spartanburg County), bringing the outbreak total to 49 cases and 52 total this year in the state.

Afghanistan: Dengue Fever

20 November 2025

UN health officials report a steady rise in the number of suspected dengue fever cases in Afghanistan since the end of September, with a marked surge during the last 2 weeks. During the second week of November, officials report 1,021 suspected cases of dengue fever with no associated deaths were reported from Nangarhar province, which shows a 7.7% increase compared to the preceding week (948). Since the beginning of 2025, 4,384 suspected dengue fever cases, with no associated deaths, have been reported from 6 provinces.

Mexico: Rickettsial Disease [Update]

20 November 2025

The Sinaloa Pediatric Hospital confirmed that, so far in 2025, 12 cases of rickettsia have been registered.

USA: Dengue Fever, Oropouche Fever [Update]

20 November 2025

According to the Florida Department of Health, two additional autochthonous dengue fever cases were reported from Miami-Dade County during the past week. This brings the state total to 58 cases of locally acquired dengue since the beginning of the year.

Lastly, Florida officials reported the first travel associated Oropouche fever case of the year.

Argentina: Syphilis [Update]

20 November 2025

In Argentina, the National Epidemiological Survey reports that a period of steady increase of syphilis cases began in 2011, accelerating markedly from 2015 onward. In 2025, a 20.5% increase was recorded compared to the same period in 2024, with a total of 36,702 cases in the general population.

Ethiopia: Marburg Virus Disease [Update]

20 November 2025

The Ethiopia ministry of Health has stated that the Marburg virus has been confirmed in the southern Ethiopian region of Jinka city. So far 17 suspected people have been tested. The Ethiopian Society Institute reference laboratory has confirmed that 3 of them have died from the virus.
