Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

France: Chikungunya Fever and Dengue Fever [Update]

In a follow-up on the growing arbovirus situation in France, health officials report as of August 19, 2025, 154 indigenous chikungunya cases have been reported on mainland France.

In addition, 13 locally transmitted dengue fever cases have been reported to date.

Somalia: Diphteria

21 August 2025

Somalia is battling a sustained and intensifying diphtheria outbreak, particularly Puntland regions of Mudug, Nugal and Bari. According to the latest data, 482 confirmed cases and 27 deaths had been reported.

Mexico: Rabies

21 August 2025

The Zacatecas Health Secretariat reported a human case of rabies in a 17-year-old female patient, which is the first case reported in the state in nearly 40 years.

Samoa: Dengue Fever [Update]

21 August 2025

In a follow-up on the dengue fever outbreak in Samoa, the Ministry of Health reports that since the beginning of the year, 9,571 clinically diagnosed dengue cases, of which, 3,070 were laboratory confirmed through August 17. There has been six fatalities recorded to date.

Israel: Measles [Update]

The Israel Ministry of Health reports that since the measles outbreak began about three months ago, 526 patients with measles have been diagnosed and there have been 2 deaths.

Mainland China: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

21 August 2025

Shunde Health Bureau reported 12 additional confirmed cases of chikungunya fever in Shunde District, Foshan City on August 19, mainly concentrated in Lecong Town, Beijiao Town and Chencun Town, all of which are mild cases.

USA: Measles [Update]

21 August 2025

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today that over the past 2 weeks, it has received reports of 19 more measles cases, bringing the national total to 1,375, the most since the disease was eliminated in the United States since 2000.
