Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Colombia: Influenza

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection, in coordination with the National Institute of Health, informs the public that, as anticipated in the communication of December 18, the detection of the Influenza A(H3N2) virus, subclade K (J.2.4.1), was confirmed in Colombia, in an imported case with a history of international travel to the United States.

USA: Tetanus [Update]

29 December 2025

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data through December 13 this year, 37 Tetanus cases have been reported in USA, up from 33 for all of 2024 and 18 in all of 2023. This is the most in over a decade.

Bangladesh: Nipah Virus Infection [Update]

According to the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research in Dhaka, four confirmed Nipah virus cases were reported in Bangladesh in 2025, accounting for 4 fatalities.

Brazil: Dengue Fever [Update]

29 December 2025

Brazil recorded 1,660,190 probable cases of Dengue fever in 2025, according to the most recent update from the Ministry of Health. During the same period, the disease caused 1,762 deaths, while another 200 deaths are still under investigation.

The Ministry of Health, through the Public Health Institute, reports the detection of Influenza A(H3N2) subclade K in samples analyzed in Chile.

USA: Measles [Update]

24 December 2025

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is reporting 9 new cases of measles in the state since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina related to the Upstate outbreak to 153 and the total number reported to DPH this year to 156.

USA: Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever [Update]

24 December 2025

The Florida Department of Health reported an additional local transmission of dengue fever in Miami-Dade County this past week, bringing the state total to 62 from four counties- Brevard (35), Hillsborough (1), Miami-Dade (25), and Pasco (1).

While no local transmission of chikungunya has been reported in Florida this year, 250 travel associated cases have been reported, with 44 in the past week alone.

Iran: Dengue Fever [Update]

According to data from Iranian health officials, 255 confirmed dengue fever cases have been recorded in the southern province of Hormozgan, with the capital city of Bandar Abbas accounting for the vast majority of cases (248).

Ethiopia: Marburg Virus Disease [Update]

24 December 2025

In an update on the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak in Ethiopia, the Ministry of Health reports no new confirmed MVD cases on December 21, 2025, continuing a trend of containment for at least a week in the country's first such outbreak that started in late November.
Cumulative figures show 14 total confirmed cases, 9 deaths, and 5 recoveries, with zero patients on treatment and 2,495 laboratory tests conducted, reflecting robust surveillance efforts.
