Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Israel: Measles [Update]

29 September 2025

In a follow-up report from Israel, health officials report that an unvaccinated toddler, aged 11 months from Jerusalem died yesterday from measles. This makes four fatalities from measles in the past week. This is the sixth death from measles since the beginning of the outbreak - all under the age of two and a half and unvaccinated.

Costa Rica: Dengue Fever and Malaria [Update]

29 September 2025

Through the middle of September 2025, Costa Rica health officials report 3,983 cases of dengue fever, of which 46 were reported cumulatively with warning signs.

During 2025, 53 cases of malaria were reported in the country.

Cuba: Chikungunya Fever

29 September 2025

The Ministry of Public Health states that the western province of Matanzas has confirmed cases of chikungunya and is taking extreme measures.
It reports that last July, epidemiological surveillance identified feverish cases in that territory that, after the relevant tests, tested positive for Chikungunya, a disease that had not been reported in Cuba since 2015.

Democratic Republic Of The Congo: Ebola Virus Disease [Update]

29 September 2025

In a follow-up on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Kasai province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the cumulative number of cases is 58 cases (48 confirmed and 10 probable), including 37 deaths reported since the beginning of the epidemic in the Bulape health zone, representing an overall case fatality rate of 63.8 percent.
The case fatality rate among confirmed cases is 56.3% (27 deaths/48 confirmed cases).

USA: Equine Encephalitis [Update]

Health officials in Madison County, in Central New York, have reported this week a confirmed human Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) case. The case is currently hospitalized.

Samoa: Dengue Fever [Update]

29 September 2025

As of 15 September 2025, Samoa Ministry of Health has recorded a total of 13,543 clinically diagnosed dengue cases since January, including 4,004 lab-confirmed cases, with six dengue-related deaths. Children under 15 years account for 73% of cases, and the circulating serotypes remain predominantly DENV-1 (91%) and DENV-2 (9%).

Health authorities in New Mexico report a case of plague in a 77-year-old man from Bernalillo County. This is the second human plague case recorded in the state this year.

Two people died from rabies in Sarawak state on September 19, including a 22-year-old woman scratched by a stray cat and a 67-year-old housewife bitten by her unvaccinated pet dog.
