Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Philippines: Mpox [Update]

The Provincial Health Office of Zamboanga Sibugay confirms the first positive case of Mpox (also known as monkeypox) in the province.

Finland: Legionella

27 May 2025

Finnish health authorities and the Finnish Food Authority are warning the public about handling soil and compost products after several serious cases of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria in the elderly have been reported in Uusimaa, with soil being a likely source of infection.

Brazil: Dengue Fever [Update]

The Brazil Ministry of Health is reporting more than 1,000 dengue-related deaths already in 2025. As of May 17, officials report 1,008 dengue deaths in the country, with another 817 cases under investigation.

Ethiopia: Mpox

27 May 2025

According to the Ethiopia Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, a 21-day-old infant in Moyale, Oromia region has tested positive for mpox, or monkeypox. This is the first such case confirmed in Ethiopia.

Sri Lanka: Chikungunya [Update]

27 May 2025

Sri Lanka health authorities are reporting a chikungunya outbreak in the country for the first time in 16 years. A total of 173 chikungunya cases were reported from sentinel sites in Colombo, Gampaha and Kandy healthcare institutions.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Leptospirosis

27 May 2025

Sarajevo district authorities have declared a leptospirosis epidemic after it was confirmed that the disease appeared in late April. The County Public Health Institute confirmed that 17 cases have been confirmed so far.

South Korea: Vibrio Vulnificus Infection

27 May 2025

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first case of Vibrio sepsis, caused by Vibrio vulnificus, in 2025, in a patient in their 70s who already suffered from liver disease.

Pakistan: Poliomyelitis [Update]

27 May 2025

In a follow-up on the wild poliovirus-1 (WPV-1) situation in Pakistan in 2025, the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed two new cases of wild poliomyelitis in District Lakki Marwat and District Bannu, South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. (KP).

Mexico: Measles [Update]

27 May 2025

In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, the Chihuahua Health Secretariat, through the Department of Epidemiology, announced that measles infections continue to rise, with 1,490 cases reported in 36 municipalities so far in 2025, as of May 21. Of that total, 1,232 patients have recovered from the disease, five people remain hospitalized, and three deaths have been recorded.
