Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Sri Lanka: Dengue Fever [Update]

4 June 2026

In a follow-up on the dengue fever outbreak in Sri Lanka, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) of the Ministry of Health now reports 33,864 total dengue cases. The death toll has risen to 19.

USA: Pertussis [Update]

4 June 2026

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States reports a 69 percent decrease in pertussis, or whooping cough cases through May 23. From the beginning of the year, federal health officials report 4,724 cases, down from 15,211 cases during the same period in 2025.

Japan: Measles [Update]

4 June 2026

In a follow-up on the measles situation in Japan in 2026, the Japan Institute for Health Security report 511 measles cases through May 27. This compares to 130 measles cases reported during the same period in 2025, or an increase of 293 percent.

Philippines: Measles [Update]

4 June 2026

Philippines health officials report launching a vaccination campaign (Ligtas Tigdas) in the Metro Manila area that targets 1.2 million children from measles and rubella. According to the Department of Health–Metro Manila Center for Health Development, the Ligtas Tigdas campaign aims to immunize 1,200,428 children aged 6 to 59 months across Metro Manila through a supplemental immunization activity.

Uganda: Ebola Disease [Update]

4 June 2026

The Uganda Ministry of Health reports six new confirmed Ebola disease cases on June 2, 2026, raising the total to 15, with all new cases identified among contacts of prior confirmed cases. Current status shows 12 admissions, 1 death, 2 discharges, and 668 contacts under follow-up amid the Bundibugyo virus outbreak that originated in Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ituri Province and spread to Uganda including Kampala.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola Virus Disease [Update]

4 June 2026

The Democratic Republic of the Congo Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Security reports on the active Ebola outbreak in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces as of May 31, 2026, with 23 health zones affected and Ituri as the epicenter.

USA: Hantavirus Infection [Update]

4 June 2026

Health officials in Mohave County, Arizona, report a confirmed case and death from the Sin Nombre hantavirus in a resident. The source of exposure for the Kingman service area case could not be determined; however local transmission cannot be ruled out.

Brazil: Ebola Disease

4 June 2026

The Brazil Ministry of Health reports that it was notified on May 30 about two suspected cases of Ebola disease currently under investigation in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
