Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Hong Kong: Measles [Update]

8 April 2026

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health is investigating an imported measles case in Hong Kong and reminds members of the public that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles. The case involves a 30-year-old male who developed a fever, cough and runny nose on March 31. His clinical specimen was tested positive on April 6 for the measles virus upon nucleic acid testing. The patient is in stable condition.

Bangladesh: Measles

8 April 2026

Official data from Bangladesh notes that more than 7,600 suspected measles cases have been identified nationwide since mid-March, while hundreds of new patients are being admitted to hospitals daily.

Taiwan: Avian influenza

Taiwan health officials reported late last week the first case of local human infection with the H7 subtype of novel influenza A, which was genetically sequenced as H7N7.

The South Africa National Institute for Communicable Diseases report two additional laboratory-confirmed cases of toxigenic diphtheria, both from Western Cape.

Singapore: Mpox (monkeypox)

The Singapore Communicable Diseases Agency has confirmed two cases of mpox clade Ib infection in Singapore. Both are very likely infected through sexual activities, and are in stable condition.

Hong Kong: Melioidosis

8 April 2026

Hong Kong health officials reported two new melioidosis cases in the past week (March 27 to April 1). This brings the tally to five melioidosis cases as of April 1. Last year, 21 melioidosis cases were recorded.

Brazil: Measles [Update]

The municipality of Rio de Janeiro confirmed a case of measles: a 22-year-old woman, with no record of vaccination, who works at a hotel in the city. This is the second case registered in Brazil in 2026.

Vietnam: Hand, foot and mouth disease [Update]

8 April 2026

Vietnam health authorities are reporting a significant increase in hand, foot and mouth disease so far in 2026. During the first three months of the year, more than 25,000 HFMD cases have been reported nationally, a more than 400 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

USA, Mexico and Canada: Measles [Update]

8 April 2026

According to the Johns Hopkins measles dashboard, 1,698 confirmed measles cases have been reported to date in USA.

The Mexico Ministry of Health has reported 8,638 confirmed cases through April 2.

In 2026, a total of 650 measles cases (595 confirmed, 55 probable) have been reported by 7 jurisdictions in Canada, as of March 21, 2026.

Federated States of Micronesia: Norovirus infection

Health officials in Micronesia report norovirus transmission remains ongoing in Pohnpei State, with 18 cumulative cases reported as of March 20, including three new recent cases.
