Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Uruguay: Syphilis

Syphilis continues to rise in Uruguay and the region. According to data from the Epidemiological Bulletin corresponding to epidemiological week 23, in 2026 there were 3,669 notifications of syphilis, compared to 2,618 in the same period of 2025.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola Disease [Update]

9 July 2026

In an update on the Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, since the beginning of the outbreak, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 1624 confirmed cases, including 521 confirmed deaths (CFR 32.1%). Ituri Province remains the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 90.9% (1477) of all confirmed cases and 84.3% (439) of all reported deaths nationwide.

Costa Rica: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

9 July 2026

The Costa Rica Ministry of Health (MOH) reports a chikungunya outbreak in Playa Langosta, Santa Cruz canton, Guanacaste on July 1. During epidemiological surveillance, 45 suspected cases were identified, and samples were taken for analysis. As a result, four cases were laboratory-confirmed, and another 17 are considered probable and are associated with the outbreak.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Ebola Disease [Update]

According to the latest data from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health, the DRC has recorded 1,561 cumulative confirmed Ebola Disease cases, including 628 patients in isolation or hospitalized, 253 recoveries, and 506 deaths among confirmed cases in the three provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, representing a case fatality rate of 32.4%.

USA: West Nile Virus Infection [Update]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement that the West Nile virus season in the United States is having its earliest start in 22 years. At least 48 cases have been reported as of June 30, 2026: 38 have been cases of severe neuroinvasive disease.

USA: Cyclosporiasis [Update]

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis is spreading across the United States and the state of Ohio is reporting some of the highest number of cases. According to the Ohio Department of Health, 177 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in 43 counties so far in 2026.

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced on June 23, the first confirmed case of locally acquired cholera in Taiwan this year.

A human case of anthrax was confirmed in Uvs Province, western Mongolia, the country’s National Center for Zoonotic Diseases reported on June 22.

Honduras: Pertussis [Update]

The Ministry of Health of Honduras reports that pertussis has so far caused 14 deaths and resulted in more than 180 cases—both confirmed and suspected.

USA: Legionnaires' Disease

The New York City Health Department is currently responding to a cluster of individuals with Legionnaires’ disease in Manhattan. Officials report two confirmed cases, no deaths, and additional suspected cases that are pending confirmation through July 2.

Sri Lanka: Dengue Fever [Update]

7 July 2026

The Sri Lanka National Dengue Control Unit of the Ministry of Health reported 21,547 dengue fever cases in June and already 3,422 cases in the first days of July, bringing the outbreak total in the country to 58,810 through July 3.

USA: Powassan Virus

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Powassan virus (POW) in a Maine resident in Penobscot County. This is the first confirmed detection of POW in Maine in 2026.

The National Public Health Institute of Liberia reported one confirmed yellow fever case in a 50-year-old male from Polar Town, Gbao health district in Grand Gedah County on June 22.

The government of the Central African Republic announced a cholera outbreak in Bangui on June 26. The Minister of Public Health reported 197 confirmed cases and 24 deaths. The case fatality rate is 12.2%.
