Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Mpox (also known as monkeypox) when travelling abroad

Mpox (also known as monkeypox) is a zoonotic disease caused by Mpox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May 2022, multiple outbreaks wer e reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

Tonga: Typhoid Fever

12 February 2026

In a follow-up on the typhoid cluster in Tonga, the Ministry of Health has reported three confirmed typhoid fever cases, all linked to the village of Hofoa, where 43 contacts have been identified and placed under monitoring as of February 6.

Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

12 February 2026

In a follow-up on the chikungunya outbreak in Suriname, regional health authorities report the first locally acquired chikungunya case reported in the country since 2016 occurred the week ending December 20, 2025.

In French Guiana, five cases of chikungunya were confirmed by laboratory testing, of which four were classified as autochthonous and one as imported in middle to late January.

In Guyana, a total of six suspected cases of chikungunya were reported in October to November 2025, all of which were confirmed by laboratory tests and all are considered to be autochthonous cases. No cases have been reported in 2026 to date.

Comoros: Mpox

12 February 2026

The Comoros Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of mpox on January 27 after laboratory confirmation of seven cases in Ngazidja. Clade 1b has been isolated from sequenced samples. This is the first mpox outbreak reported in Comoros.

USA: Chikungunya Fever [Update]

The Florida Department of Health reported twenty-seven cases of chikungunya fever this week in persons that had onset in 2025 and that had international travel.

Argentina: Hantavirus Infection [Update]

The Argentina Ministry of Health has reported 14 confirmed hantavirus infection cases so far in 2026, following the report of 3 new cases during the last week.
