Macao SAR: Hong Kong residents contracted Dengue Fever
The Hong Kong Department of Health confirmed 3 cases of Dengue Fever who were co-workers of the same outdoor workplace in Macao.

Indonesia and Thailand: Hong Kong travellers contracted Dengue Fever
The Hong Kong Department of Health confirmed 2 cases of Dengue Fever who had history of travelling to Phuket of Thailand and Indonesia respectively.

Indonesia: Avian Influenza, human
A 28-year-old poultry trader from Tabanah district of Bali died of Avian Influenza on 21 August 2007. She had collected poultry from villages where outbreaks of Avian Influenza in poultry had occurred.

As of 4 August 2007, the Department of Health in Western Visayas region of Philippines recorded 2064 cases of Dengue Fever with 26 deaths this year, while only 776 cases with 9 deaths were recorded last year. Negros Occidental and Iloilo were the provinces with the highest number of cases in the region.

In Thailand, Phuket Provincial Health Office reported a 9-year-old boy who might died of Dengue Fever. There have been over 200 cases of Dengue Fever with 2 deaths in Phuket so far this year. Last year, there were altogether 136 cases with no death.

In Maryland of USA, 2 swimmers were attacked recently by a rabid beaver at Loch Raven Reservoir. Rabies is commonly found in wildlife including raccoon, skunk, bat and fox in the country.

Germany: Avian Influenza, poultry
In Germany, an outbreak of H5N1 Avian Influenza was confirmed in some geese of a poultry farm near Erlangen. About 160 000 geese were culled.

In Russia, 107 cases of Rabies among animals were reported in Samara during the last six months. which was a more than 10-fold increase as compared with the figure during the same period last year.
Among the 6 000 people bitten by animals, 227 of them were bitten by rabid animals.(Source: ProMED-mail 26 August 2007)
Central America and Caribbean: Hurricane
The Hurricane Dean was downgraded to a tropical depression. It has made widespread infrastructural damage throughout Mexico and the Caribbean. It has made landfall near the Mexican town of Majahual, south of Cancun and brought high winds and torrential rain in Veracruz on Mexico's Gulf coast. Kingston and Montego Bay airports in Jamaica have re-opened however power and water were still switched off in some areas.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Poliomyelitis
One new case of Poliomyelitis was reported from Bandundu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, bringing the total number of cases in the country this year to 27.
