Take precautions against dengue fever when travelling abroad

Dengue fever is now endemic in more than 100 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. This includes various popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Travellers planning to travel in these areas should take precautions against the disease. Travellers returning from areas where dengue fever is prevalent should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they feel unwell and provide travel details to their doctors.

Take precautions against Monkeypox when travelling abroad

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by Monkeypox virus. Often found in tropical forest regions of Central and West Africa. It is mainly transmitted by contact with infected animals, human-to-human transmission is limited. Incubation period is mainly from 6 to 13 days, symptoms are similar with Smallpox infection, but less severe.

Since 6 May this year, multiple outbreaks were reported in Europe and North America countries, and many patient are self-identified as bisexual or men who have sex with men. Travellers planning to travel in these areas should avoid contact with infected person. Travellers returning from these areas shall notify the doctor to seek medical treatment and inform the travel situation if feeling unwell.

USA: Poliomyelitis

22 July 2022

The New York State Department of Health and the Rockland County Department of Health alerted the public to a confirmed case of vaccine-derived Polio in a Rockland County resident.

Since oral polio vaccine is no longer used in USA since 2000, this case suggested that the transmission chain may involve an individual who received oral polio vaccine elsewhere.

The Croatia Health Ministry reported on 18 July that 8 cases of Anthrax were reported in Lonjsko polje region.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reported an additional 17 confirmed cases of Monkeypox for the week ending 10 July. This brings the total to 101 cases with 3 deaths so far this year.

Afghanistan: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

According to World Health Organization, another 16 suspected cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever were reported last week in Afghanistan. This brings the total to 115 cases, so far this year.

The Argentina Ministry of Health reported that 32 confirmed cases of Hantavirus infection including 5 deaths were recorded so far in the country.

Mainland China: Plague

21 July 2022

A case of bubonic Plague has been reported in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. According to local media, the case contracted the infection outside the region.

In August 2021, Ningxia also reported a confirmed case of bubonic Plague in its capital city Yinchuan. The case was traced back to Inner Mongolia.

One lethal case of Amebic Meningoencephalitis was reported in a Missouri resident who contracted the “brain-eating amoeba” Naegleria fowleri after swimming in the Lake of Three Fires State Park near Taylor County, Iowa, USA.

USA: Monkeypox [Update]

19 July 2022

In USA, Alabama Department of Health has reported the 1st cases of Monkeypox infection.

As of 15 July, 85 probable and confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported in Los Angeles County.

So far this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report 1,814 cases in 43 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Among these, 266 cases were reported in California.
